To create a fixed-size img file:
dd if=/dev/zero of=disk.img bs=1M count=50
- Count is the size of the file in MB

To create a dynamically sized img file:
truncate -s 64G disk.img
- You need to input the maximum size but it will expand up to that size.
- Requires a filesystem which supports sparse files (most do: ext4, ntfs, xfs, btrfs).
