Buying a used motorcycle
Guide to buying a used motorcycle in Maryland.
Things to check
- Age and condition of the tires.
- Chain should look greasy not dry.
- Make sure handlebars and pedals are not bent.
- Make sure battery terminals are not rusted.
- Check the seat condition.
- Test ride the motorcycle.
- Make sure the title is clean and matches the bike.
Titling and Registration
- Give the seller the money and have them sign over the title.
- If the vehicle is under 7 years old, get a notorized bill of sale, otherwise you'll need to pay taxes on the average retail price on nada.com.
- If you're buying a cheaper bike, it may not be worthwhile to meet the seller again and pay notary fees. Check the price first.
- Once in your possession, get insurance online. I use Progressive.
- Take the title and bill of sale to a tag and title place. I went to Motor Car Tag & Title.
- You'll pay the sales tax (6%), title fee ($100), tag fee ($20), MVA fees ($20), and the shop's fee (~$60) and get a temporary registration.
- If the motorcycle is already inspected, you'll pay for registration and be done.
- The new title will be mailed to your address.

- I went to AK Cycles in Gaithersburg, MD. They charge $75 + tax.
- Return to the tag and title to get the full registration.
- Motor Car Tag & Title charges for registration ($104 for 2 years), $9 MVA fee, and $20 shop fee.
